With the help of Twitter users (and About.com readers), we’ve compiled a list of Twitter etiquette tips you can use to make sure you keep your tweets productive--and not annoying!
When on Twitter:
- Make Sure Caps Lock Isn’t On. Nothing is more annoying than reading a tweet in ALL CAPS! (Editor’s Note: I can’t believe we are still having to tell people not to write in all caps! it’s the online equivalent to screaming!) -- submitted by James DeRuvo, of California.
- Twitter New Items, Not Facebook Statuses. Twitter friends might also be Facebook friends. While it might be easy to share status message content across social networking platforms, it can get boring--quick! --submitted by Tyler Dykstra, of Grand Rapids, Mich.
- No Promotion Flooding. A quick way to lose Twitter followers is to “promotion flood” the network with 10 consecutive tweets within a few minutes time containing links to articles on your web site. Pace yourself. --submitted by About.com's Guide to Cooking Equipment, Jessica Harlan, of Atlanta, Ga.
- Don’t Overtweet. On the flipside of our last tip, also consider limiting your tweets to no more than five an hour, or 12 per day maximum. -- submitted by Robert Rexach, of Puerto Rico.
- Think Twice About Sending Twilight Tweets. Consider all your friends who receive Twitter alerts on their mobile devices before sending that tweet about the yummy late night taco run at 3 a.m. While you might be enthused to share, your friends might cause you to flee to the border with pitchforks and pajamas in tow! -- submitted by Kari Ann McBride, of Austin, Tex.
