Louisiana Sexting Laws

By , About.com Guide

Definition: In Louisiana, sexting can result in charges of felony sexual exploitation and creation, possession and distribution of child pornography.

Effective August 15, 2010, House Bill 1357 makes sexting illegal in Louisiana, defining sexting as "sending suggestive photos by e-mail, computer or other electronic means."

Minors found guilty will be referred to counseling and other options short of jail under the state's juvenile and children's code. Adult offenders will face penalties that include a maximum six months in jail, a $500 fine or both.

In the United States, it is against the law to possess lewd photographs of minors. A New York lawyer is petitioning for federal sexting legislation that would make sexting a misdemeanor for minors.
