Iowa Sexting Laws

By

Definition: In Iowa, sexting can result in charges of engaging a minor in a “prohibited sexual act” or simulate a “prohibited sexual act,” a Class “C” felony carrying a fine of up to $50,000 for each offense. According to 728 of the Iowa Code, “prohibited sexual act” refers to, among other examples, “nudity of a minor for the purpose of arousing or satisfying the sexual desires of a person who may view” the depiction.

In the United States, it is against the law to possess lewd photographs of minors. A New York lawyer is petitioning for federal sexting legislation that would make sexting a misdemeanor for minors.
