According to the second annual AP-AOL Instant Messaging Trends Survey, the number of adults using IM clients has increased as workplace use is becoming more commonplace.
The survey revealed, according to information provided by adult respondents:
- Twenty-sevent percent, or one in four adults, use instant messengers at work
- Fifty percent of at-work IM users say instant messaging increases productivity
- Twenty-four percent, or nearly one in four adults, send more IMs than emails
- Eight in ten adult IM users said checking email is their most popular Internet activity
- After e-mail, 49 percent said online searches is their second most frequent activity on the Internet
- Nearly four in five, or 79 percent, of at-work IM users said they have used IM in the office to take care of personal matters
- Nineteen percent, or one in five, said they send more IMs than emails to co-workers and colleagues.
