Removing Profileye from Facebook

How to Delete Facebook's Profileye Spam Application

By , About.com Guide

A new Facebook application launched March 22, 2009 has the potential to expose the personal information of Facebook users and information about your friends.

The Profileye application notifies users that a specific Facebook contact has viewed your profile along with two others, inviting users to install the application to learn who has been watching your profile. Once you click on the link in your notifications panel, a message appears along with a paid advertisement informing users there is no application available to track who views your profile.

Although Profileye appears to be nothing more than a spam application, the new annoyance spreads rapidly by collecting your Facebook contact data and inviting them to add the application without your knowledge. This could pose a potential threat somewhere down the road with another stealth application, such as Profileye and the Error Check System Message from February.

Receive the Profileye Message? Most users report receiving a message in their Facebook Notification, as follows: [Facebook User's Name] visited your facebook profile page. Please CLICK HERE to see your other 2 visitors.

If you have received this message, follow these steps to remove the potentially hazardous Profileye application:

  1. Click "Applications" in the bottom, left-hand corner of Facebook.

  2. Next, click "Edit" in the top, right-hand corner of the Applications menu.

  3. Locate "Profileye," then click the "X" on the line next to its name.

  4. A window will appear confirming this action. Select "Remove" to completely remove the application.
