Messaging with Offline Contacts

Facebook © 2008

One of the most frequently asked questions about Facebook Chat is why an IM is suddenly bounced back along with a red message; this indicates your Facebook contact has now gone offline or has signed out of Facebook completely. You can check to ensure your contact is still online by accessing your contacts list or by looking for a green or red dot (indicating “online” and “offline,” respectively) on the IM tab next to your contact’s name.

Oftentimes, if Facebook is working on their servers or on the Facebook Chat application itself, these messages will appear more frequently. Other times, you can chat all day without an issue.

If you ever receive this message, clicking the “Send as a message” link following your rejected message will allow you to continue the conversation when they are available in their inbox.
