What is an Instant Message?

Learn What They Are, How to Effectively Communicate with an Instant Message

By , About.com Guide

When a person inputs text from their keyboard into instant messaging client software, the data which is output and received by the other user is referred to as an instant message. More simply put, an instant message is the product of an IM client.

But, in addition to simple text-based messaging, as was standard for many years, the definition of an instant message has now expanded to include graphics, images, audio and even video as IM software and Internet speeds have improved.

How Can I Instant Message Effectively?

The best thing about sending IMs is the ability to communicate quickly and in real-time. The cons, however, generally relate to how your instant messages might be read by others. Here are a few tips to help make the most of your IMs to friends and family:

  • Use clear, concise language to increase understanding, rather than netspeak or IM acronyms.
  • Emoticons can help others differentiate jokes, sarcasm and banter from serious conversation.
  • Choose a sans serif font, color and text-size, such as Arial or Tahoma, as they are easier to read.
  • If you must send multiple instant messages in quick succession, consider condensing them into larger messages and wait a little between sending additional messages to give the reader time to get through the IM.

When Shouldn't I Send an Instant Message?

While I believe there are 7 terrible IM topics you should never discuss in an instant message, each person should decide for themselves what is appropriate. A general rule of thumb is to never send an IM which could potentially compromise your security or your privacy. A few other instances where an IM should not be used might include:

  • Breaking up with someone.
  • Sharing sensitive business information.
  • Sharing personal account information.
  • Exposing yourself (both literally or figuratively).
  • Harassing another person.
  • Engaging in sexually-explicit conversation, where the receiver is sensitive to such and/or a minor.

What Should I Avoid While Exchanging Instant Messages

In addition to taking general precautions, like protecting your identity and account information, there are also both written and unwritten rules you should aware of when sending instant messages. Your IM client will have its own set of rules, while general Internet etiquette should always be followed. You should also heed any rules about instant messaging while at school or in the workplace.

Who Sends Instant Messages?

While many people might tell you sending an instant message is old school or somehow no longer in use, they are sorely mistaken. Students, parents, teachers, bankers, grandparents and virtually every single age group and profession can find great use for exchanging instant messages in their everyday life. In fact, instant message use will increase three-fold to over 1.3 billion users by 2016, according to Juniper Research.

What Do I Need to Instant Message People?

To send an instant message, you will need at minimum an input device such as a desktop or laptop computer with keyboard, or an Internet-enabled mobile device; an IM client; and a screen name or account ID for both you and the person you wish to message. When Do People Use Instant Messages?

There is no right or wrong time to send an instant message. Each day, over 12 billion IMs are sent, according to a 2005 AOL study, at all hours. While some people use it as a primary mode of communication, others might use instant messages when they need quick answers, such as in a place of business.

Where Do People Send Instant Messages From?

With the proliferation of better and faster Internet-enabled phones and devices, IM is now available on the go, at home, at the office or any place you might find yourself. Instant messaging is especially useful in places where conversations are prohibited or where noise might make hearing more difficult, such as a party or concert.

How Do I Use Emoticons in My Instant Message?

The graphical smileys or faces which are supported by most instant message services are called emoticons, and they serve a great purpose: illustrating thoughts, feelings and helping to call out when you might be less than serious than an instant message might indicate. Here are a few resources to get you started with emoticons:
