Using Gmail Audio/Video Chat

Multimedia Chat Comes to Your Gmail Inbox

By , About.com Guide

After successfully downloading and installing the Gmail Audio/Video Chat plugin, launching a video or audio chat in Gmail is easy. Follow these easy instructions to get chatting by video or audio today!

Launching Audio or Video Chat

First, make sure you are signed in to Gmail. When you locate a friend you want to launch a chat with, double-click their name on the Gmail Talk contact list. As before, a chat window will appear in the lower right-hand corner.

Select the “Video & More” tab, then either “Start Video Chat” or “Start Audio Chat.” Gmail will launch a video or audio window on your screen and send an invitation to your contact to accept. Happy conversing!

What’s That Ringing?

Keep hearing a ringing sound in Gmail? That alert is telling you someone wants to chat live by audio or video! When you hear a ringing alert, an invitation to connect with your contact will appear. Choose “Answer” if you would like to connect, otherwise, press “Ignore.”

Window Options

As with normal text IMs, video and audio chats can also be detached from your Gmail window into its own separate window by clicking the “Video & More” tab and then selecting “Pop-Out.”

Want to go full-screen? Expand the size of the video screen to cover the entire height and width of your monitor by pressing the full-screen image in the upper left-hand corner of the video or audio window.
